Summer Moving Safety: Tips for Handling the Heat
Summer is famously the busiest season for moving. School’s out, vacation time is saved up, and the weather while hot is ideal for getting things done. But with high temperatures and heatwaves common, it’s crucial to take safety precautions when moving during the summer months.
Here are some key tips to help you stay safe and comfortable while moving in extreme heat:
1. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day aim for at least 8 glasses or more if you’re physically active. Keep a reusable water bottle with you and refill it often, or have a case of bottled water ready for easy access.
2. Use Sunscreen
You’ll likely be spending hours outside, so protect your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to all exposed areas, and don’t forget spots like the back of your neck, ears, and shoulders. Reapply as needed throughout the day.
3. Wear a Hat
A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap helps shield your face from direct sun exposure, reducing the risk of sunburn and protecting your eyes from harsh rays.
4. Dress for the Weather
Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen can help keep you cooler. Avoid dark colors and heavy materials like denim, which can trap heat.
5. Take Breaks Often
Moving is physically demanding. Give your body time to rest and cool down by taking regular breaks in a shaded or air-conditioned space. Don’t overdo it, especially during peak heat hours (typically between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.).
6. Use Shade Wisely
If possible, park the moving truck in a shaded spot to keep it cooler while loading. Whether it’s the shadow of a building or under a tree, shade can make a big difference in reducing your risk of overheating.
7. Keep Pets Cool and Safe
If your pets are part of the move, make sure they’re well cared for. Provide fresh water, keep them in a shaded area or an air-conditioned room, and try to limit their outdoor time until you’re ready to hit the road.
Moving in summer can be stressful, but with the right precautions, you can stay safe and comfortable—even during a heatwave.
